Functional Restoration Services

Functional Restoration Services (FRS)

People come to JMA because they want to feel better, and they want something to change. Whether they are experiencing physical discomfort or emotional pain, they feel stuck and any relief they may have found has been short-lived.  Often they have tried everything to make their problems go away.

While going through change and experiencing pain is an inevitable part of life, how much we suffer along the way can be minimized. By becoming aware of the present moment rather than grieving the past or fearing the future we can reduce our suffering and engage with life challenges in a more encouraging and productive manner.

Our Functional Restoration Services provide individuals with physical, cognitive and behavioural management for a broad range of physical and mental health difficulties in a timely and cost effective manner.  When viewed broadly, this can include specific interventions such as:

Physical Health (Kinesiologists)

physical conditioning

functional reactivation

behavioural therapy

Mental Health (Psychotherapists)

acceptance and commitment therapy

behavioural activation

cognitive therapy

behavioural therapy

behavioural activation

dialectical behavioural therapy

How Will These Services Assist You?

All of the interventions that we provide have a very strong evidence base for significant functional improvement, not only in mental health conditions such as mood disorders and anxiety disorders, but in a broad range of physical health conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic headache, chronic low back pain, other chronic pain syndromes, chronic fatigue syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Our Kinesiologists and Psychotherapists have extensive training and lengthy expertise in implementing these techniques both in the context of interdisciplinary treatment and as stand-alone counselling.

Since 2010, we have successfully resolved over 80% of the cases where we provided functional restoration services.  We are happy to provide you with our outcome data.

Access to these services is simple and quick.  We will review the referral information that you submit and, with your approval, will contact the patient within 3 business days.

The approximate cost for this service, based on 10 sessions of 1 hour in length, is $3,000.

If necessary, and agreed to, the client could be seen by one of our consulting Psychologists for a psychological assessment and/or treatment.

These services are available throughout Canada by video conferencing or by phone or in one of our offices in Ottawa, Toronto (3 locations), Brampton, London, Waterloo, Burlington and Calgary.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT uses mindfulness practices to help people become aware of and develop an attitude of acceptance and compassion toward painful thoughts and feelings.

Behavioural Activation (BA)

BA is designed to treat depression. BA focuses on the depressed person’s behaviours that keep him or her stuck in depression.

Cognitive & Behavioural Therapy (CT & BT)

CT deals with thoughts and perceptions, and how these can affect feelings and behaviour. BT focuses on an individual’s learnt, or conditioned, behaviour and how this can be changed.

Quota Based Physical Conditioning

This can include graduated cardiovascular training and/or progressive resistance training to assist the individual to gradually resume their pre-disability level of functioning.

Rebuilding Social, Recreational & Family Activities

JMA guides clients through a graduated return to meaningful activity while assisting them to incorporate recommended strategies for pain management.

Work Hardening

Our work hardening process uses cognitive and physical work hardening strategies designed to utilize real or simulated work activities to restore physical, behavioural and vocational functions.

J Marlin and Associates Inc. offers Cognitive Behavioural Therapy services to help individuals increase their sense of vitality, well-being, and fulfillment.
